Yachting

Yacht at sunset

We are a harbor house before anything else — Newport Harbor is our front yard, and we treat the water as a way of life rather than a backdrop. So we keep the practical file alongside the pleasant one: the clubs and marinas we admire, the brokers and charter crews we would call, and the harbor’s own rules and costs, kept current from the sources that set them.

Yacht Clubs

Balboa Yacht Club

Corona del Mar · Newport Beach

Founded in 1922 as the Southland Sailing Club. The club's own mission runs three ways — cruising, angling and racing — carried by a dining room, a cruising fleet, an angling program, a junior program with Olympic mentors, and the White's Cove outstation on Catalina.

Membership & costs

Joining runs through a formal application process; an inquiry packet is available at the club or by email. Prospective members are encouraged to own a boat or maintain an active interest in boating, and to take part in club life. The club's SCYA association directory profile describes membership as by member sponsorship only.

House rules (as published)

Reciprocal visitors from recognized yacht clubs present a current physical or digital membership card; visitors whose clubs are not on the reciprocal list arrange a letter of introduction in advance. All reciprocal visitors check in at the Front Desk; reservations are not required. Dining runs Wednesday–Saturday, 11:30 AM–9 PM, with weekend breakfasts.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club

Balboa Peninsula · Newport Beach

A private yacht club founded in 1916 on the Balboa Peninsula — a clubhouse with a beach and a guest dock, a bar and dining room through the week, and an exceptionally strong junior program.

Membership & costs

The club's own site publishes almost nothing about membership. Its SCYA association directory profile records that it is not currently looking for new members; five sponsors and boat ownership are needed, and its 150 member berths carry a wait of 8+ years.

Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club

Corona del Mar · Newport Beach

A member-owned yacht club founded in 1958, per the club. Jazz performances and guest speakers, a swimming pool, a very active cruising group, a member-owned 68-slip marina with dry storage, and a social calendar the club frames around being the friendliest club on the harbor.

Membership & costs

Published special: a 30-day trial membership is available. Sponsors are required; applicants who know no member are introduced by the Membership Administrator. Boat ownership is not a prerequisite, and the club positions itself as affordable.

House rules (as published)

The club holds reciprocal privileges with yacht clubs around the world.

South Shore Yacht Club

Newport Beach

Founded in 1957, per its SCYA listing. Members dine through an affiliation with Newport Beach Yacht Club in the same building, with a public marina in front.

Membership & costs
Initiation$900 one-time
Club fee$120 / month

Joining runs application, membership committee, then Board approval, with a 30-day posting and trial period. Published benefits include reciprocal privileges with other yacht clubs, dining through the club's affiliation with Newport Beach Yacht Club in the same building, marine-supplier and harbor-rental discounts, and organized cruises. The club calls itself “one of the best priced yacht clubs in Newport Beach” — its own words.
